I found it to be very interesting to learn that the Ottoman empire allowed others in the community to have their own religion. The idea of toleration is one that is rarely found when a group takes over another area. Most of the time these groups force their ideas onto everyone. The idea of toleration meant that the Ottomans would tolerate anyone of any religion, allow people to practice and live their religion, but they had to wear clothes to mark what religion they were. Despite all of this Christians were not allowed to build new churches.
Its so different the way countries go about conducting their matters in today’s world compared back to the 1300s. The way empires went about getting what they wanted seemed more powerful in the sense that people knew that they meant business.
They showed more intelligence than most empires back in the day. Their training for combat was extensive, and their use of weapons and horses was very effective as well as difficult. I would be impressed even to this day to see someone standing on a galloping horse shooting any sort of weapon, not to mention how amazed I would be if they hit their target.

i thought that the Ottomans granted religious toleration was very interesting as well. This is something that wasn't seen a lot and was something that i wasn't expecting while learning about the expansion of the Ottoman state. I believe that this concept of religious toleration is one huge factor contributing to the success of the Ottoman Empire.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chelsea. I believe that granting religious tolerance to the people in the empire can be considered as one of the many factors that made the Ottomans so successful. I think that if they had not granted religious tolerance, the Ottoman would have spent a majority of the time dismantling revolts.
ReplyDeleteIt think the religous tolerance was useful in keeping the conquered peoples content, and the Ottoman Empire sucessfully maintained their authority, marking others to keep an eye on them. Controlling possible dissidents was important to keeping power, as Desiree said they needed to allow other religions or they would constanty be dealing with revolts. It continues to seem like the Ottoman model of governing vast territories was effective and powerful.
ReplyDeleteThe idea to let other religions still practice their faith within the Ottoman Empire was indeed an innovative and excellent way to rule at the time. The Ottoman Sultans realized that any riots or rebellions would just be to damaging to the empire, so measures to keep people happy were highly encouraged.
